This is the final chapter in the saga of Himura Kenshin. There are a total of two parts in the Seisou Hen, which is set in the year 1893, fifteen years after the anime series ends. Kenshin is once again called on to protect Japan during the Sino-Japanese War. He reluctantly agrees to return to the continent even though it requires him to "gather his courage" to even do so and even though he is ill. He leaves the others behind and they await his return in fear for his safety. The first episode of the final chapter opens with Kenshin being swept into the sea while saving the life of a sailor and highlights most of the high points in the series from Kaoru's perspective. In a series of flashbacks she recalls how Kenshin always protected her and the others. The episode closes with Kaoru being kidnapped by Enishi. The second episode opens with a short rundown of the Jinchuu Arc in flashback and once again told from Kaoru's perspective, then it continues mostly in the present. We learn that Kenshin spends his life helping those in need, even after he loses his ability to do Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu. This is where he contracts the illness that is slowly stealing his life and strength. Kaoru is also ill with the same thing and Yahiko goes Kyoto to bring Kenji, who has been training under Hiko Seijiro, back to his mother's side. Sanosuke and Megumi show up in their friend's hour of need. Sanosuke helps the now deathly ill Kenshin to return home from China, while Megumi attempts to keep Kaoru's spirits up, although Kaoru herself is also extremely ill. Yahiko, after teaching Kenji the meaning to true strength, returns him to his mother. Kenshin and Kaoru are finally reunited under the falling sakura at the same place Kenshin had said goodbye to Kaoru just before leaving for Kyoto, both of them having wandered there somehow instintively knowing that the other would be waiting for them. It is here that Kenshin tell her that he is home and where he dies in her arms, his famed strength having, at last, given out and his cross scar having faded completely from his cheek.
